a Community ordered by Love and the wisdom of Saint Benedict
THE ROLE OF SAINT BENEDICT'S RULE IN OUR COMMUNITY
First, we just started reading it. Then, the Rule started challenging us. Surprisingly, Benedict's organisational wisdom addressed our own issues - the way in which we organise our life in the parish. Though the context of life in a monastery is distant, the dynamic of the community is the same. Benedict's is love manifest in responsible stewardship. As a small community, we also need to develop the skills organising our works, and holding together a fellowship based on love and compassion. We need to address similar issues: accountability, conflict resolution, attentiveness to differences, strength and weakness.
In every Eucharist we celebrate, we read a passage of the Rule. However 'distant' it might sound, we want to be challenged and shaped by Benedict's vision of the Kingdom of God. One of us reads from the Rule, and we are trying to translate it into our own urban life situation (family, workplace, parish). What we started experiencing is the presence of a loving authority, which reflects that of Our Lord, Jesus Christ. Obedience to this 'rule' helps us to work better together. While reading the Rule, we sense the presence of Benedict, and, our Loving Heavenly Father. We are so proud that we can build a local cell of the Kingdom of God! The spirit of the Christian community, the presence of the Twelve Apostles, is genuinely felt. It is worth toiling in this School of Discipline!
